A Star Wars Parable
A Story Told Out of Order
Here’s something fascinating about Star Wars: the movies were released out of order.
The first film wasn’t Episode I—it was Episode IV: A New Hope.
Audiences were thrown right into the middle of a galactic war. They met Luke Skywalker, the young, wide-eyed hero, and Darth Vader, the dark, masked villain whose presence radiated fear.
For two full movies, the storyline was simple:
Good vs. evil. Light vs. darkness. Luke vs. Vader.
Then Came the Twist
In Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, everything changed with one unforgettable line:
“I am your father.”
In a moment, the narrative was no longer just about heroes and villains. It became a personal story—one about a broken family, a fall from light, and the possibility of redemption.
Suddenly, earlier scenes made sense:
Vader's reaction to Luke’s name
The emotional weight of their battles
The hidden motives of other characters
The twist didn’t rewrite the story—it revealed what the story had always been about.
A New Lens Changes Everything
When Episodes I–III (the prequels) were later released, audiences saw the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader. But this time, they watched knowing the ending—and it made the fall even more heartbreaking and profound.
They didn’t just see what happened. They understood why it mattered.
The Bible Has a Twist, Too
Now, shift your focus to Scripture.
Reading the Old Testament without Jesus is like watching the early Star Wars films without knowing Vader’s secret. It’s rich and powerful—but also mysterious and incomplete.
You’ll encounter creation, covenants, kings, sacrifices, prophets, and laws—an epic story filled with drama and longing. But the resolution is missing.
That’s how the disciples read it, too.
They had memorized the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets. They walked with Jesus. But they still didn’t understand how it all fit together—until after the resurrection.
The Moment of Revelation
In Luke 24, two disciples are walking to Emmaus, devastated by Jesus’ death. The risen Christ appears to them—though they don’t recognize Him—and walks alongside them.
And then He does something remarkable:
“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”(Luke 24:27, ESV)
Jesus re-read the Scriptures with them. Not a new Bible—but new eyes.
And suddenly, the whole story changed:
The Passover lamb? That was Him.
The tabernacle? A shadow of God dwelling with His people—Jesus.
The sacrifices? Pointing to His Cross.
The King? The greater Son of David.
The suffering servant in Isaiah? Always Him.
The Scriptures didn’t change. But now, the meaning was unmistakable.
From Confusion to Clarity
Just like the twist in Star Wars transformed how fans saw the story, the revelation of Christ transforms how we read the Bible.
He’s not a side character. He’s the center.
Jesus is:
The Hero
The Sacrifice
The King
The Redeemer
He was there the whole time.
You just needed to know where the story was going.
Final Thought
The twist didn’t alter the story. It simply revealed the truth that was always there.
Jesus is the twist that changes everything.
